Since its inception in 1970’s, the Vintages division of the L.C.B.O has offered fine wines in limited quantities. This division now has twice-monthly releases, and once the inventory of a particular wine is sold out, it may or may not be offered again; if it is it will be another vintage. The management of Vintages knows that a good portion of the population in Ontario likes the convenience of buying a wine with which they are familiar. For this reason the concept of “Essentials” was developed which offers affordable, thoughtfully selected wines available all the time.
Once a year, a poorly performing wine may be de-listed, but more often than not a new wine or two value wines are added.
Presently the Essentials catalogue lists eight spirits, one liqueur, two tawny ports, five champagnes, 30 white and 52 red wines from all over the world.
Once a year, wine writers taste the whole portfolio with the exception of a few very expensive and rare spirits like Louis XIII cognac by Remy Martin at $ 2,400.00 a bottle and Johnnie Walker Blue label $ 245.95.
Vintages of wines listed may change during the year.
Descriptions here are relevant to the vintage noted.
This year the following wines pleased my palate:
20-Year-Old Tawny Port, Taylor Fladgate, Douro Valley, Portugal
Rich apricot and dried fruit aromas, and lengthy, nutty, honeyed finish make this wine an excellent choice for sipping after an extended gourmet meal, or with a piece of milk chocolate. Once opened, it can be kept for a few weeks without much oxidation.

It’s still modestly priced but I’d recommend some of the other sauvignon blancs in this release just as highly, even though some of them are $10 to $15 less. However, if you must have this kiwi badge, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a lovely, balanced wine, bursting with refreshing herbal and citrus aromas.
