Book review: Jonny Fuego and Michael Ames Gibbs Smith, Utah – CRUISERS.

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Both authors are bicycle fanatics and love this simple but effective mode of transportation and exercise machine.
There a many types of bicycles from cruisers, to sport, to leisure, to tricycles, just to name a few.
Cruisers deals with old-style bikes, and designers and creators build for themselves or friends or customers. Yes, you can have a custom-built bicycle to your specifications, and enjoy your time riding on a bike to the design of which you have contributed. This richly illustrated book should be on the shelf of each bike enthusiast.

If you wanted to lean about unusual bikes, all you have to do is turn to page 92 and see what Marcel Danek writes about custom-built bikes, and then you can read how some handy bike fanatics create new vehicles from old ones.
There are unusual bikes, fully manufactured from wood, including the saddle, basket, chain guard and fenders, created by Igor Rovbar, a Slovenian wood craftsman and bicycle fanatic.
And then there is Olli Erkkila, the Finn, who excels in unusual designs that would turn heads on the street.
Jonny Fuego, one of the authors, writes: “ A bicycle is one oft the simplest machines out there; two wheels, a crack, and a chain.” You can build one buying the right aftermarket parts and create your own masterpiece.
The market is full of undistinguished, mass manufactured bikes, that can be used by those whose objective is nothing more than travelling from point A to B faster than on foot, but if you want to make a statement and ride for pleasure with comfort, buy this book and see what imaginative people have done to this simple machine.
