Holiday at Læsø a Danish island part V.

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

We have been 14 days at Læsø a Danish island 30 km. out of Fredrikshavn. We want to tell a little about the general vacation on the island and the activities that are found there. The island has about 2,200 residents, but in summertime up to 110,000 tourists is visiting.

http://winesworld.net/foto/leso.jpg

The island is about 20 km long and half the size in wide. There are many bike ways and very nice to bike on (the highest point is about 45 meters). The island is best for those who want a quiet calm, swimming, cycle type of vacation. For those who like cities and a lot of activities in the holiday season, this is not the place. There is not much traffic, and in general by peaceful surroundings. To get to the island we had to take a boat to Fredrikshavn and then take another boat back out to the island.

The tast of Læsø’s jomfruhummer ( Nephrops norvegicus – Norway lobster ).

We cannot have been on the island without having tasted on the island’s major export item namely jomfruhummeren (Norway lobster). And we had some luck and got to taste a fresh black lobster as well, even if it was not entirely in the season yet.http://winesworld.net/foto/hummer.jpg

We end this series with some photos of the island. And will eventually recommend people who want a vacation with content; quiet, relaxing, great activities for children, swimming, great scenery, good food and an entire island that is really designed for tourists and especially families with children.

Holiday at Læsø a Danish island part IV.

A visit to Læsø Uldstue ( wool cottage ) – a different and evocative store.

http://winesworld.net/foto/ullstue1.jpg

The store is located in rural areas in an old farm with seaweed and grass on the roof. The farm itself is worth a visit.

http://winesworld.net/foto/ullstue3.jpg

The farm is as all old farms on Læsø built in a rectangle with the farmyard and a well in the middle.

http://winesworld.net/foto/ullstue2.jpghttp://winesworld.net/foto/ullstue7.jpg

Inside the store can be found just about everything that can be made of wool and most are handmade.

http://winesworld.net/foto/ullstue5.jpg

As you can see there is a wide range.

http://winesworld.net/foto/ullstue6.jpg

Uldstuen has 600 lambs and sheep graze just outside the store and they deliver all the wool they need for day-to-day operations.

http://winesworld.net/foto/ullstue4.jpg

We had to buy us something from the shop and even for those who are not as interested in wool and clothing; it is worth taking the trip just to look at the farm and the environment.

Krobækgaard offer following activities:

* Horse back riding

* Trip – horse and wagon

* Weekend stay

* Training and education

* Bed and Breakfast

* Cafe

We shall, however, take for us what is going on every Wednesday evening in Krogbækgaard, namely Grilled wild boar and musical entertainment in the farms backyard. It costs 295.- Dkr. each and it included all the food you can eat during the evening. Beverage however, must be purchased. In addition to the actual meat, there was a wonderful buffet with all kinds of food. I will let the images speak for themselves, so you see what was served.

http://winesworld.net/foto/kro7.jpghttp://winesworld.net/foto/kro9.jpg
As you can see from the pictures, everyone is in a fine and relaxed mood. And not to forget, all the good food!
http://winesworld.net/foto/kro6.jpg
This was the first round of food. The bread was also very good.

http://winesworld.net/foto/kro3.jpghttp://winesworld.net/foto/kro1.jpg
Here are the musician who stood for today’s entertainment. He was Danish and played just so high that we were able to enjoy the music and talk together without any problems. Te Chief himself accounted for the grilling and the meat was just absolutely wonderful.

This picture was taken before everything started and when we were waiting for the good food we were able to enjoy a beverage from the café.
http://winesworld.net/foto/kro5.jpg

Here is from the front of the cafe, where we sat in the sun afterwards and just relax while the kids had activities with some play apparatus. We were indeed very happy with this visit. We also had the weather on our side by over 20 degrees Celsius late in the evening. The only thing that was a little bit off is that it was a lot of flies in the backyard, but that is to be expected on a farm. We strongly recommend visiting when you are on the island.

Den Brune Bi ( The Brown Bee )

Friday, July 25th, 2008

http://winesworld.net/foto/brundr.jpg

On læsø, there are about 20 bee-keepers who works with The Brown Bees. They are very proud of the brown bees and they are very peaceful and pleasant to work with. And they are trying to keep the species as pure as possible, so in the eastern part of the island, it is only illegal to keep brown bees.

Summer honey from Læsø is in taste very aromatic and good. Heather honey which is ready in September is strong and spicy. We did like this honey from Læsø very well and can encourage those who have the opportunity to try it out.

Holiday at Læsø a Danish island part II.

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

We have been 14 days at Læsø a Danish island 30 km. out of Fredrikshavn. We want to tell a little about the general vacation on the island and the activities that are found there. The island has about 2,200 residents, but in summertime up to 110,000 tourists is visiting.

There is not much traffic, and in general by peaceful surroundings. To get to the island we had to take a boat to Fredrikshavn and then take another boat back out to the island.

In part II we will take for us the island’s zoological park. It is small, but as most of the island in beautiful natural surroundings. It’s called Søborggaard Dyreland and there is about 250 animals classified in 70 species from around the world. There is also a large children’s play area and a small souvenirs kiosk with ice-cream and beverages.

http://winesworld.net/foto/l_dyr2.jpgIt costs only 40 Dkr. for adults and 30 Dkr. for children to enter. The area is small and intimately. You get a much closer contact with the animals than in the larger zoos and it feels relaxed and comfortable to just loaf around to look at the animals and enjoy the scenery.

Opening hours are 11am – 6pm in the peak season, and otherwise open from 15/3-19/10 with reduced operating hours. However, as most of the people who visit the island will do it in the summertime.

http://winesworld.net/foto/l_dyr3.jpg

Are you looking for a little more action and excitement combined with an interest in horses, there are activities for that too. Read more on Dagbladet a Norwegian newspaper or Rideferie.dk.

This goat loved to be patted on the head, it stood absolutely still on the stone.

http://winesworld.net/foto/l_emu.jpg
This one however, I did not take any chances…..

We had an enjoyable time at the zoo and we recommend anyone who visits Læsø to take the trip. As souvenirs we bought us a peacock feathers and a big spike from a major type of hedgehog.

There is not much traffic, and in general by peaceful surroundings. To get to the island we had to take a boat to Fredrikshavn and then take another boat back out to the island.

In this first part we will take for us, the island’s main attraction, Saltsyderiet.

Saltsyderiet

The making of salt was very big on Læsø many years ago, but everything stopped in 1652. They ran out of wood, the forest was all cut down. First, in the 80’s the production started up again and everything is done in the old-fashioned way. Aside from the exhaustion of the forest, the production is in a very small quantities and it is done in a naturally balanced way.

http://winesworld.net/foto/l_salt3.jpg

The process is very simple; they have big tanks with salt water, which they heat up during the progress. The water evaporates and the salted is left. For the tourists who visit, they can even try themselves in small vessels where they can make their own salt. They make about 200,000 bags of salt each year. The bags are in size 1 kg and less.

http://winesworld.net/foto/l_salt4.jpg

It’s free to visit Saltsyderiet and the cost is only 60 Dkr. To make your own salt.

http://winesworld.net/foto/l_salt5.jpg

Saltsyderiet lies in natural and beautiful surroundings.

http://winesworld.net/foto/l_salt2.jpg

You can buy pancakes with ice cream and jam from the cafeteria. And you can enjoy it out in the beautiful scenery. All in all, it was fun to see how the make salt and to learn some of Læsø’s history.
