Sport celebrities like Mike Weir, (golf), Wayne Gretzky, (hockey), Greg Norman, (golf), and others realize that their fame can be used as a marketing advantage.
Their name recognition does offer advantages if the product they associate with, or produce, offers pleasure and consistency.
Mike Weir, a charity minded individual, and golf player of international fame, decided to get involved in wine marketing using his fame.
The Weir Foundation helps a number of charities. Since the inception in 2004 Mike Weir Foundation contributed close to two million dollars to following charities; Autism Society, British Columbia Women’s Hospital, British Columbia Children’s Hospital, Bluewater Health Foundation, Children’s Hospital of Eastern Canada, and I W K Health care.
I recently I have had the opportunity to four of Mike Weir’s wines that are blended or made with his involvement and suggestions:
Sauvignon Blanc 2008, a lovely, crisp, balanced and refined wine.
89/100
Chardonnay, 2007, aromas of pear, lemon and vanilla waft out of the glass. A well-balanced, powerful wine with a soupcon of oak and long finish.
91/100
Pinto Noir 2007, light, strawberries, and berry fruit aromas coupled with a silky texture and long aftertaste.
89/100
(Available at the Vintages as of October 24, 2009)
Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2007 A superb blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot yielding a medium-bodied, brilliant and flavourful wine with ripe tannins and excellent finish
91/100
Available at mikeweirwine.com and occasionally on Vintages releases as is the case with the pinot noir above.
