Prague is the oldest and most prominent Jewish centers in the Central Europe. Despite natural disasters (i.e. floods), pogroms and attempts at expulsion, the continuity of the local Jewish traditions, religious life and culture has never been totally disrupted throughout the history of the Prague Jewish community.
Distinguished rabbinic figures were active here in the early middle Ages, influencing the entire Jewish world with their ideas. The last peak of Jewish culture in Prague is marked by the names of many artists and scientists that enriched through their works the world’s cultural heritage.
By paying an entrance fee of 300CZK (~15$) or 200CZK for students and elders, the doors of the most important synagogues are opened to all tourists eager to learn more about the habits and life of the Jewish people. The Maisel Synagogue, the Pinkas Synagogue, the Old Jewish Cemetery, the Klausen Synagogue , the Ceremonial Hall and the Spanish Synagogues show different pieces of life and death, of customs, traditions and holiday ceremonials specific to the Jewish community.
Unfortunately, photos are not allowed inside any of the above places, therefore the brochures below. Click on them to see larger images. For further details on the topic, just ask.

Personally, I found the Pinkas Synagogue most touching and extremely overwhelming. Its interior is turned into a memorial to the 80,000 victims of the Nazi Genocide from Bohemia and Moravia. One of the rooms is an exhibition with drawings made by children from Terezin camp. (that’s another story to be told)
Except the already mentioned buildings, the Jewish quarter also includes: The Jewish Town Hall, the Old New Synagogue, the High Synagogue, Robert Guttmann Gallery, and the Reservation Centre.
