Wine drinkers who would like to appreciate their favourite beverage ask many questions. How is wine made and what role does the winemaker play? Does the predominant grape variety play a role in the taste of wine? How to taste wine a professional? How to shop for wine? Where and how to store bottles? What food goes best with what wine? And hundreds more. Marnie Old had the genial idea to approach professionals in he field and ask each of them to write an article about a specific topic. |
Many gladly obliged, which is the result of this invaluable book. Even if you know a lot about wine you can still pick a few ideas, and learn facts you never knew. E. Sbragia, a long time head winemaker of a very large and famous Napa winery, explains the role of fermentation in simple enough terms for everyone to understand the process and the role of grape quality in
the end product. G. Gallo, the winemaker of Gallo, contributes her knowledge between white and red wines and Randall Grahm, the owner and winemaker of a mid-sized California winery, writes about the differences of flavour and philosophies of Old – and New World wines.
Chapter two contains seven articles abut tasting wine and what to look for while evaluating.
Chapter three gets involved in shopping and a very interesting article about corks, screw caps, and boxes.
Chapter four goes into details of matching food and wines, and chapter five explains how to proceed to order wine in a restaurant. One advice that stands out, if there is a sommelier (wine waiter), don’t be shy asking him/her and indicate the price rage of the win you are willing to pay.
Chapter six deals with storage at home, service temperature, appropriate glass size and shapes and how to handle mature wines.
This is an excellent book for the ordinary consumer who would like to know more, and ultimately appreciate wine to the fullest.

The one element left out of all wine storage and cellaring commentaries is the essential need for wine inventory. The Vinote system, http://www.vinote.com, is well proven to add this important aspect to your wine storage.
